Numbers in Lockdown

This project came about during the first days of the "shelter in place” order instituted at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020.

I was papermaking at the time, and decided to mark the passing of each day by creating a custom-made piece of paper in the shape of a number. Each figure represented the number of days spent at home in lockdown. As we spent more days in shelter, the amount of numbers I had grew, and I eventually decided to compile them into a collage that represented the chaos, fear, and confusion of that time. Throughout that period, and despite the difficult environment, I tried to show the beauty of paper. I decided to stop on day 74, which was June 1st, 2020, since I felt that things had started to fall apart. Number 74 was black and broken, like the general mood that day.
